Interfaith Cambridge & “We All Belong Here”
St. Paul’s is part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) and holds to the following understanding…
“This church upholds the dignity of all people. We recognize the image of Christ in every person and serve that person as Christ himself. In meeting diverse people, we begin with a core sense of respect for the value of each person as a unique child of God.” ELCIC Social Statements 2011-2025.
On October 18, 2026, Interfaith Cambridge was launched through the organizational efforts of leadership from Interfaith Grand River (IGR), a well-established, and esteemed organization operating across Waterloo Region that aims to create a welcoming and compassionate community of neighbours across the Region. IGR was founded 25 years after the launch of the Region’s “Mayor’s Breakfast” brought people of diverse faith traditions together once a year for a community breakfast. Interfaith Grand River was just launching in 2011 when the September 11 tragedy happened in New York City. The IGR organizers were quickly tapped to help bring Waterloo Region residents together to process their shock and grief and desire to support one another through the tragedy and to act against the rise of hatred that might be coming in the aftermath of 9-11.
On Canada Day of 2025, leaders from the St. Paul’s community were invited to gather with a local mosque community to jointly celebrate Canada Day. In months leading up to and out of this event, and congregational conversations in the pews and during fellowship times it was clear that the people of St. Paul’s are committed to “Widening their Welcome” to diverse neighbours including Interfaith Neighbours. In Spring of 2026, Pastor Karen Kuhnert joined the inaugural Committee to launch the Interfaith Thanksgiving Celebration event in Cambridge on October 18, 2026. The people of St. Paul’s in the pew have long enjoyed being an Interfaith Community and has for years had not only Lutherans and other diverse Christians in the pew, but also members of other non-Christian faith traditions in the pew. St. Paul’s people are a welcoming, open-hearted people by the grace of God.
